How to clean and care for PLEXIGLAS® correctly: The clear instructions
🧼 How to clean and care for PLEXIGLAS® properly: The clear instructions
PLEXIGLAS® impresses with its brilliant transparency and high durability – but it requires proper care. Here you'll learn how to safely clean and disinfect PLEXIGLAS® and keep it looking great for a long time – without scratches, streaks, or stress cracks.

Why PLEXIGLAS® needs special care
Unlike regular glass, the surface of PLEXIGLAS® is more sensitive to alcohol-based glass cleaners, aggressive solvents, and abrasive cloths. This can result in fine scratches, dull spots, or stress cracks. With the right cleaning agents, the surface remains permanently crystal-clear.
Safe indoor cleaning
- Dust & fingerprints: Gently wipe with lukewarm water and a soft microfiber cloth. If necessary, add a drop of mild, fragrance-free dish soap.
- Never rub dry: Dry friction increases electrostatic charge and can promote fine scratches.
- Gentle specialty cleaners: For heavier soiling, use an alcohol-free plastic cleaner suitable for acrylic. Always use a clean microfiber cloth.
- Rinse & dry: Wipe with clean water and gently dry with a second, lint-free cloth.

Outdoor cleaning
- Light soiling: Rinse with water (e.g. garden hose), then clean with a soft sponge and soapy water.
- Stubborn residues: First soak soft dirt (e.g., pollen, bird droppings), then wipe gently. Avoid high pressure, rotating brushes, or rough pads.
- Use pressure washers gently: If unavoidable, work at lower pressure and at a sufficient distance; avoid hot water above ~70 °C.
What you should avoid with PLEXIGLAS®
- Do not use glass cleaners containing alcohol or ammonia (may cause stress cracking/dulling).
- No solvents such as acetone, petrol, nitro thinner, turpentine.
- No abrasives (scouring powder, scouring pads) and no paper towels .
- Do not rub dry too hard (static charge, micro-scratches).

Disinfection of PLEXIGLAS®
- Disinfect gently: Apply isopropanol (IPA, 70%) sparingly to a microfiber cloth and gently wipe the surface. Do not let it "stand" on the surface.
- Suitable products: Preferably use acrylic-compatible disinfectants; if in doubt, test in an inconspicuous area.
- Avoid over-care: Frequent, aggressive disinfection can fatigue the surface in the long run.
Long-term care & scratch protection
- Antistatic & Care: From time to time, use an antistatic plastic cleaner or a suitable care emulsion to reduce dust attraction.
- Only soft cloths/sponges: Microfiber cloths and soft viscose sponges are ideal.
- Storage: Store panels flat, leave protective film on until processing.
- Fine scratches: Gently polish with a suitable PLEXIGLAS® polishing paste and a soft pad.
